Pregnant man: we just want to be a family - World news - News - Belfast Telegraph

Pregnant man: we just want to be a family - World news - News - Belfast Telegraph: "Thomas Beatie's sex change treatment made him legally male, but he retained his female reproductive organs and he's not afraid to use them."

There's been a lot of blogging about this recently. People have been discussing if a transsexual is fit to be a parent, or why someone who didn't want to be a woman (or wasn't a woman at all, except physically) chose to retain a uterus, etc.

For me, the big question that keeps popping up is this: why are we obliged to be categorised by gender? If equality is a goal that most people recognise as valid, why then do governments persist in categorising us with a meaningless label?

It would take care of so many inequalities, not least the ones posed to homosexual, bisexual and trans people. And what does the categorisation give us? Other than medically, it seems to be an unnecessary detail.
